I write this post in my pajamas after my first 5 days at Kerrville folk festival. Had a great first night going all out, only to wake up with a sore throat the next day that continued to worsen (no thanks, I'm sure, the the torrential rain and general dampness of the weather) Decided to come back to Austin yesterday and stay the week in order to recuperate, catch up on some work (and sleep) play a show, and pick my friend up from the airport. Am planning to return to the fest on Saturday, hopefully in full health and force!
Want to give a big shout out to the AMAZING people at cureville for all of their care, remedies and general good vibes. Y'all rock!!!!
In other news, we had our first event at the Rose Heart Community last Tuesday, and it went GREAT! The backyard looked gorgeous and magical with all of the christmas lights (courtesy of Laura Rose) and everyone had a great time. The music, provided by Steven Bacon and Kendra Kinsey, Amy Sue Berlin and Alyse Black, was sublime. Looking forward to resuming in June after the fest and playing with Laura Lee and Grace Park!!
Lots going on in the world of booking and trees!
Been adding a bunch of new shows to my calendar, including the beginnings of my August tour back East, part of which will be in mini-tour up to Vermont with my fellow WSC member and talented songstress Lexi Weege! We got rained out last Tuesday for our Rose Heart Community Show, but are planning to resume this coming Tuesday with an AWESOME line up of some of my favorite performers and people in Austin: Steven Bacon, Kendra Kinsey, Alyse Black and Amy Sue Berlin! It's gonna be great.
In the mean time, Kerrville is just one week away and I am scrambling to get all my ducks in a row. We also have 1 room available in our house if you know of anyone looking for a place in a sweet little art village :)
Hey Friends! The last week has been a bit of a whirlwind, with many projects in their beginning phases, but starting to solidify:
Gave my first Ukulele lesson over skype and it went SUPER well! Am really excited to expand my business into this new area of teaching. It's also been fun to teach myself regular ukulele in the process - will surely make me a better Baritone player, as well as musician all around. If you are interested in taking some lessons, please give me a holler! Thanks to the powers of the internet, I can teach people from anywhere in the world!
The zine companion to "The Giantness of Little Things" is also starting to shape up nicely. Basically all of the content is done, now just waiting on cover art. Forgot how much work it takes to make one of these (about an hour per page times 32 pages) but also pretty cathartic and relaxing. The collages are pretty interesting and I think you will enjoy them. (Note, one of my favorite pictures featured above)
Lastly, we are moving forward on transforming our backyard into a real performance space and it is looking GREAT! (will take some pics and post them next week) There is still some crap in the backyard, but it is far less than there was. We also found a goldmine of christmas lights and have wrapped a few of the trees. Really excited for our space to take off. It's just bursting with potential!
That's all for this week. XOXOX Katie
Went back into the studio last Sunday 4/27 for the final big band day. We recorded foundation tracks for Goodbye, Accordion, Mira's in the Kitchen, Idle flow and Tina's Song. A bit of a more garage rock vibe this time, which I was totally diggin'. From here this month, it's a matter of getting down the final uke parts, and then sitting back and listening to the tracks and how we want to arrange. Have another big recording day with just me and Bruce on Sunday, after which, we should have foundation tracks for the entire album!!! THIS IS SO EXCITING! I came up with the track list already, so will be great to listen to everything in order and make sure that is sounds right.
In other news, Just bought a nice new concert Uke that I am beginning to figure out and teach lessons with! If you all know of anyone looking for Uke lessons either in Austin or else where (I can also teach via Skype) send them my way!!
Sneak peak: Running through Mira's in the Kitchen before recording!
