DESCRIPTION: In American society, and across the world, female bodies are constantly under attack - whether it be from outside forces or our own doing. But the tides are changing with social awareness and collective consciousness rising. This workshop offers a space for us to come together as women, explore our own experience and share our stories.
Writing is an excellent tool for connecting our inner and outer world. Our bodies hold information kept in silence - it is through deep connecting and listening that we can unlock and translate it's language. Katie will walk participants through a series of fresh, experiential and thought/body awakening writing exercises, in a safe, supportive environment. All Experience Levels are Welcome!
Katie holds a BA in Creative Writing from The University of Wisconsin-Madison, with awards and accolades for her Senior Thesis. She has been facilitating writing groups for a variety of marginalized populations across the United States for over 10 years
EVERY DAY CONSENT: Tools To Help Us Discover Our Own Body's Wisdom and Communicate Our Truth In Every Day Situations.
DESCRIPTION: Though we often think about consent only in the context of dating, consent is ACTUALLY a part of our every day lives. As a professional massage therapist, obtaining informed consent is a CRUCIAL part of my job, as is is understanding/respecting client boundaries, communicating effectively (both verbally and non-verbally) and successfully meeting client expectations. All of this, however, is also a two way street. I have noticed in my work, that often times clients do not have the body awareness, communication skills, or simply feel empowered enough to co-create a session with me. (For example: I will ask, "Where would you like focus on today / what parts of your body are you experiencing pain?" and get a response like "I don't know... whatever you think!") There are also many times where my assessment is that the root cause of the physical problem is emotional or environmental. How do we even begin to unpack that in an hour session?!
I created this workshop to support and empower people to learn body awareness, communication skills, and emotional literacy, in order to have more effective bodywork treatments, as well as interactions beyond the massage room. We will practice skills that help us listen to and understand our own physical and emotional experience, so that we can better communicate with others, and improve the clarity and connection in all of our relationships. The workshop is NOT structured around romantic relationships, however the tools are transferable, and can be applied in just about any real-life situation. We will explore as a group a variety of interactive, self-reflective, and collective sharing activities, all to be held in a safe, confidential and supportive container.
